RMRDT Project Committee

The RMRDT Project Committee meets bi-annually.

The dates of these meetings are published on the HOME page of this website in the right-hand side panel. (Must obtain the dates.)

The committee considers priorities allocated by the Pork and the Cattle and Small Stock Planning Committees. The committee approves and select projects for funding in the final instance.

Funding is firstly allocated to projects which are in already in progress, before funds are allocated to new proposals or protocols.

The management and administration are the responsibility of Prof HC Schönfeldt, she is the RMRDT administrator and reports to the RMRDT Project Committee.

Planning Committee (R&D) Cattle and Small stock

The Planning Committee for Cattle and Small stock is appointed by the Planning Committee and consists of subject specialists, industry representative and researchers nominated by universities and research institutions.

This committee moderates and approves the recommendations of the different Working Groups and is responsible for the final acceptance, prioritization and allocation of funds to the different projects. Subject Working Groups exist for the projects which started before 2020 and are based on the 7 Focus Areas which were in place. From 2020 after the New Programmes have been introduced, new working groups called Programme Working Groups have been set up. To read more about these click on the appropriate menu item above.

.Planning Committee (R&D) Pork

The RMRD SA Planning Committee for Pork is appointed by the Project Committee and consists of subject specialists, industry representatives and researchers nominated by universities and research institutions.

This committee moderates and approves the recommendations project proposals and is responsible for the final acceptance, prioritization and allocation of funds to the different projects.

This applies to new projects as well as projects in progress in subsequent years, through to completion.

The management and administration are the responsibility of Prof HC Schönfeldt, she is the RMRDT administrator and as such she reports to the RMRDT Project Committee.

The role of the Working Groups

Working Groups have been established to deal with the each of the Programmes. Each Working Group has their respective areas of speciality. The individual members are all experienced and have a very definite interest in research and have vast industry knowledge. They operate independently and select projects for funding. Their function is to do the detailed work on research needs, project planning, evaluation, monitoring and budgeting as required by the Project Committee.

Project and Planning Committees and SAPPO’s Portfolio Committee

Various committees have been formed in an advisory capacity to the RMRDT Trustees and the RMIF Council on research and development funding. These committees are representative of the various Red Meat Industry Forum voluntary member organisation and also of the groupings in the research fraternity, universities and institutions.

The committees identify the research required, evaluate and prioritise research project proposals and protocols, consider and approve budgets for individual projects, monitor progress and finally evaluate final reports of research projects. Ultimately these committees inform the RMRDT Project Committee on which projects should be funded. In addition, SAPPO has an R & D Portfolio Committee which functions parallel to the Pork Planning Committee.
